Ignoring the April 1st status of this thread, they started development in 2012 and it's only just 2016. They were in Beta, still are. Many other games (MMOs) have had f2p models and done very well with it. I think Tera was paid at first and went f2P a year later, a little while after it was getting $100mil a year or something (can't verify this, can't find website that says).
Besides... FF15, 11 years in the making. This industry doesn't know the meaning of the term 'financially viable'.
