Forums - PC Discussion - New VR product from Nokia

This is the new VR product from Nokia. It's a camera and not a new headset as many of you guessed.

The Ozo is a 360 degree virtual reality camera that can also record audio, all contained in a spherical ball.

The Ozo has eight cameras and eight microphones around its surface, and can enable filmmakers to create virtual reality (VR) video in real time, which can be viewed in a VR head-mounted display (HMD). Another feature Nokia has touted is the Ozo’s ability to churn out a low-resolution version of the footage in a few minutes for filmmakers to see. This process normally could take hours as the VR footage is stitched together.

Nokia has said the device should be available by the end of 2015.

The reveal video is shit. But what the thing is is very cool. Take this camera to all sorts of incredibly amazing places, on Earth and the Moon, Mars, Venus, Pluto, wherever and voila, virtual tours of all the places you wanted to visit but never could.

Lol, imagine booking a tour of Egypt. You pop on a VR headset, you get live stream from a robot mounted OZO and you drive the robot with a controller. Hundreds of OZO mounted robots all buzzing around the pyramids. Switch to a drone that is flying a fixed circuit around the ruins and you get a bird's eye view. A one day virtual tour package of the Egyptian pyramids for a tiny $300. A non-self drive virtual tour of Mars for $1000.

why are so many companies banking on unproven tech? these may not be successful at all

Because.... they test these things, and when reception of a technology is overly positive, its usually a good idea to jump on the bandwagon.

VR isnt a "unproven" tech anymore, they have games and demos that wow people, and the reception from testers is so positive its highly unlikely it wont be a success.

Any new thing is risky it could fail or succeed don't you think the first TV or Computer was a risky

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

Its the best time to jump in. As soon as possible. You never know what will happen. This market could blow up. In the next decade. And then the companies that did nothing will be the losers. The Tech Business is about talking calculated risks.
