I Just got back yesterday from the big island (I live on Oahu) and I will say nature's performance was specatular. Where else can you drive your car, park in a parking lot walk 100 feet and watch one of natures greatest displays (the top link is the view you get from the lookout I am referring to).

I have always been into geology so this really was a treat for me. Also star gazing at the top of Mauna Kea is a must (13,700+ feet and completely perfectly clear air)

If you have some vacation days and money I recommend you get to the big island to see this. I must add the big island is amazing (although beaches pale in comparison to Oahu's) and it is not as expensive to visit as it would be to go to any other the other Hawaiian Islands (I stay in the massive Hilton resort and I think I paid maybe 179 a night, compared to 250 a night for even an average hotel in Waikikki)
