Forums - General Discussion - What makes a good story?

Alot of people find a good story important in a video game or a movie, but what exactly makes a good story? Not making it predictable? Or maybe make it very realistic? Or that it makes sense and maybe not being cliche? Personally i dont think their is much difference in a good story and a decent story. Because who decides whats good and not. Of course their is a difference between a horrible and bad story against a good or great story, but personally i think people look a bit too much into whats a good story and what is not. We all have different opinions on whats good and not, but wheres the difference between a decent/good story against a great or amazing story. To me i think some cliche stories are the best ones. Thats why they are cliche. As for now im confused what people consider a good story or not. So what do you think?

Around the Network

Many things:

-Likeable characters.
-Complex ideas explored in accessible ways
-Good twists, as long as they're not just tacked on for the sake of it.
-Good pacing.
-Interesting or unique setting as a backdrop (e.g Xenoblade Chronicles)

Not really sure...
Maybe because whatever is presented, is done in a believable way.
So, it doesn't really matter if it's cliché, simple or complex. As long as the whole works right in it's parts, it will work.
