Forums - Gaming Discussion - Even publishers got this gen wrong...

So far Sony is really dominating this gen. Wii U not selling very well and Xbox One still ahead of its predecesor for the same time frame (not sure how long this will last).

I have to say, before E3 2013, I though this would be a very close gen with Xbox One taking US+UK, PS4 taking rest of Europe+World, and Wii U japan. I even though the Xbox One might have the lead Worldwide because of MS big pockets. And I am sure some off you did too.

But other people you would not expect to get this that wrong are the publishers. EA went full support for MS with Titanfall (and please let us not fall for could only be done on Xbox One ...) and almost started implementing their own type of DRM. Then you have got Square Enix ( FF type 0, FF XV, KH 3) all announced to possibly come to the xbox one. And maybe the biggest surprise of them all is Insomniac with Sunset Overdrive, and back in 2013 before the launch all we knew is that Sony has the Order, Bloodborne and marketing rights for Destiny (that was a big surprise as well) and WatchDogs while MS had: Titanfall (HAVE YOU SEEN Titanfall!!!), dead rising 3, forza 5, the cloud, Ryse, Sunset Overdrive, kinect 2 (remember the first one sold over 20 millions) + momentum from going to 30 millions consoles sold to 84 millions consoles sold  gen to gen, with Sony going from 155 millions sold to 84 millions sold gen to gen. Oh and let us not forget the "PS4 has no games" considered as "fact".

/thread.

I feel bad for insomniac. They made some great games in PS3 but sold poorly. Resistance 3, ratchet and clank a crack in time deserves more sales. Then they again put their dice for the wrong system (Sony is partly to blame for this).

Id blame Sony for this more than MS. MS paid for more "Exclusive Rights" than Sony did.

Id back the any horse (wrong or not) if it paid me enough to do so.

Pretty much this, these deals were about money and off setting risk, not about who the publishers thought would sell more consoles...

Of course MS pay them for the deals, and seeing how this gen has turned out so far, they probably feel like MS got those deals cheap. Now if MS wants to try to continue to have those same kind of deals, those publishers can now ask for a lot more money to compensate the money they would not be getting releasing for the PS4.

Even EA chief financial said: "I think you should assume that we made that decision when it was back a few years ago when we decided to go exclusive,"

"We had some forecast at that time from where we thought both Xbox and PlayStation would be and that's what we based our decision on. I think we're still feeling very comfortable with that,"

Not to the same extent we've been seeing last gen and the beginning of this. I will have to disagree with you. Moneyhatting is most feasible when you either have total domination or a close sell through ratio with the competition.

With the perpetual rise of development costs and ease of porting between the two, the amount of money MS will have to pay to keep anything away from Sony will only increase as Sony's lead in sales does as well. I'm sure the two correlate;

On top of that, this whole notion that MS is willing to take loss after loss for little gain is ridiculous.

Agreed.  I would say the amount they might demand from Microsoft could increase if the disparity in sales continues to grow.

E3 2013 definitely changed a lot of gamers' minds with the DRM fiasco. Microsoft still has to recover from that, and their pushing Kinect even though it's pretty much useless now. I don't think the various deals helped MS because Sony has just as many deals.
