Forums - Sony Discussion - Why do we need Blu Ray?

Better technology ,more reliable discs ,more space ,better transfer rate ......

Why do whe need BR ?Because technology improves and we want our games to improve .Its very simple .

Agreed. No disc scratching to worry about anymore, the PS3 Blu-Ray drive being better at reading old scratched movie and PS2 DVDs as well. Also less noise production for similar transfer rates. In short just much superior and more modern technology.

DVD upscaling is a nice feature also supported by the PS3 and other Blu-Ray players (so need to get rid of your old DVDs like some are suggesting here, it's not the same situation as was the case with moving from VHS to DVD). But really the difference between upscaled DVD and native 1080p movies is easily noticeable:

We certainly don't "need" Blu Ray for movies. Upscaling dvd using a good upscaling dvd gives results which are very impressive. The difference with Blu Ray does not justify the difference in costs of movies.

I know Blu Ray (Sony) fans might bite my head off for that statement but that's the truth. I watch HD movies at home on a 6 foot wide projector screen and the results were not so amazing as to blow me away. I thought it was because my projector might be very good at standard definition but not great at high definition. But then I went for a home cinema exhibition and saw a demonstration of Transformers on a very high quality dvd player and then on a HD DVD player. I could tell the difference but the difference was certainly not enough to make me say I will pay £20 for a high def movie when I can get it on dvd for £8. And the demonstration was done using a £6000 projector.

As for games I don't know. Guess blu ray is useful to avoid multiple discs but at the same time the added space requirement might just be developers being lazy compression techniques and or developers packing games with huge amount of cut scenes rather than focusing on game play.

It's obvious that the people who don't see the need for Blu-Ray haven't seen a Blu-Ray movie. As an upscaled DVD looks good, but not as good as a blu-ray. period.

That bunny pic is soooooooo cute!
I have never seen a bluray movie so I dont know what it's like.

People who question the need for HD and BR and the very same people that record Coronation Street on their 15 year old video recorder is LP.

@davygee

And what's wrong with that? VCRs work just fine. They've probably got very nice houses from all the money they've saved not buying into, frankly needless, technology. No everyone shares the same ideals as you.

Another question, thanls for showing me the light, I can know see blu ray let's me see pores on the squirrel from Ice Age. But why will HD take away our normal Cable channels? Don't they realize people A) Can't afford an HD TV or B) Don't want an HD TV?
