One of the Zoras somewhere mentions Jabu Jabu really likes fish.
In Majora's Mask they were probably relying on people knowing about the fish from Ocarina of Time. You can also sell them for rupees (as you can in Ocarina).

I already played OoT so it made sense to me when I was given the clue.

I got stuck in WW because you had to use a bottle of water on a dried up plant to advance further in the story. I thought that was very poorly designed as well. Guess I'm the only one as people keep calling WW easy (combat wise it is, but some of the things you need to do are very cryptic).

That explains it. The Wii version crushed my soul. That was the one moment in the game where I genuinely despised the motion controls (well...aside from the final boss).
