Forums - Sony Discussion - Bet: PS4 won't sell under 180k any week in 2015

Yes I think it will sell under 180K more than 1 week. Part of the reason is that they sold so many this year, I think a lot of people bought it in anticipation of what is to come and eventually that will catch up to Sony and you won't see as big numbers during the bigger games as people would expect because of that.

Not to knock the PS4, but this year wasn't Sony's best year of support for one of their consoles. I feel like the console will be somewhat front loaded and while it will still remain in first place, it's going to lose some lead next year to MS.

And just briefly looking at this year, just randomly, I see quite a few weeks where it was near or below that figure so yeah it will dip below the 180K mark AT LEAST once.

I don't doubt the PS4 will be a success, but come on, to expect it to pass 180K would take a price drop and a healthy release schedule, I haven't looked at next's years release dates so far, but we all know there are slow points in the year where sales can dip.

The PS4 will not sell under 200k in any week during 2015!

Another excellent thread Lichty! I'm going to agree with you on this. What you have pointed out just makes sense.

Japan had no PS4 sales the first 2 months of the year. Plus I think the baseline next year will be much better with the line up they have. Some weeks will have pretty decent spikes. China launch in January. You can bet on it being much bigger than the X1 launch and given the time of the year it comes out sales should be decent. It will increase it's weekly baseline by a bit but by how much is yet to be seen.

On top of that PS4 should naturally sell more next year given it's year two.

Thanks :)

I agree with everything. The launch period is very important indeed, mid-January to mid-February is like Christmas in China.

I can definitely see the PS4 tracking less than 180K a week ...

The issue really isn't the first half of PS4's second year on the market. What's stopping the PS4 from achieving that feat is the summer season. I don't think Batman Arkham Knight is going to be able to carry on the PS4 until the beginning of September ...

Either do I, but I think it is 'okay' to assume, that Sony will announce a price drop at E3, maybe even before that.

Also, let us not forget, there are still A LOT of game slated for 2015 without an actual release date:

- Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
- Until Dawn
- Tearaway Unfolded
- Mad Max
- Just Cause 3
- Ratchet & Clank
- Rime
- Homefront: The Revolution
- No Man's Sky (is it confirmed for 2015?)

Just to name a few.

I could totally see this happening.2015 is gonna be a great year for the PS4, probably one of the best in its lifetime.

I totally agree, 2015 is shaping up to be a monstrous year for PS4 !

Agreed.

If the PS4 doesn't go under 180k all year, you get to control my sig for a week.

If it does go under 180k, I get to permaban you.

Seems fair?

And why would you want to permaban me? :)

Surely you can come up with something else.

This bet might be over by February.

You could make this bet a bit safer by saying it won't sell under 360k in two consecutive weeks to catch slumps before big game releases that have bundles.

It would actually be a good idea .. I'll have to think about this one.

This would be amazing! :)

Starcraft how about if you lose you get permabanned. That seems fair.

It would be in the best interest of MGS to release in the summer. It will have very little competition and it's huge fan base will buy the game regardless. Then it can go for the festive casuals at Xmas. The boost PS4 gets from MGS5 will be massive. SO I really hope it comes in the summer.

MGS V, Tearaway Unfolded, and Ratchet & Clank all look like they could be released Before the end of Q2 ...

Mad Max and Just Cause 3 are looking up to be Q3/Q4 games. I have no idea about No Man's Sky. Rime doesn't even have a solid release date yet ...

Until Dawn and Homefront: The revolution look like the only games to be able to make it for a summer release ...

i bet that it will sell below that in a given week. if you lose, you have to put my hot pop advertisement in your signature for a year. if youre so confident, that shouldnt be a problem.

LordLichtenstein, you make good threads. Well argued.

The lowest point for PS4 last year was 130k. Add a 30% increase and it gives you about 170k. Add in the fact that it was supply constrained and that VGC still has it under tracked before August, and I can see it not going below 180k all year.

I'm not 100% sure that it will happen though, it's 50-50. It could go below that a few weeks.

"marketing deal"

we prefer the term "pretend exclusive" round these parts

180k is pretty high. I think a next gen system needs to do 100k+ every week to be considered doing good. Some weeks VGC had PS4 below that, but it was probably untrue at the time.
