Depends on why and how long/many times someone has been unemployed or fired.

As for which looks better on a CV that again depends on how many times they've been fired and how long it took before it happened, while it wouldn't say why on the CV the new employer is going to look at references so if they don't have any good references despite having quite a few previous jobs it will look pretty bad.

Ok, say that you and your best friend both go to college together and finish at the same time with similar grades. You both start applying for jobs as game developers for months. He gets a job, but you don't. After a year of working on a project, he's fired. It's not like he didn't do well, just not well enough. They replace him with someone a bit better/more talented/willing to work extra long unpaid hours. You can't find a job as a game developer and all you can get is part time jobs as a waiter. You ask how he's doing and he goes "Life sucks, man. It's hard to explain. You won't get it. Getting fired is the worst feeling in the world".

Who do you think has it worse. You or him?

Under those circumstances I think he has it better. A years experience and not really a bad reason to get fired, shouldn't really harm any future job prospect while the years experience will certainly increase them.

I'm glad we agree. Because it appears to me that getting fired is treated as the worst thing that can happen to one professionally, while I think that not having a job at all can be even worse. I keep seeing this reaction from people:

"Oh f**k, man, you got fired? That sucks!"

"Oh, you're still looking for a job? Yeah, the market isn't pretty bad at the moment".

Around the Network

Unemployment is worse. Being fired/let go hurts for a little bit (unless the grounds for firing was extreme).

While being unemployed is just soul shattering; emotionally and mentally.

That's the impression I got from my unemployed friends.

why is this on a site that talks about video game sales please remove this thread

Being fired means you done something wrong while being laid off means the management done something wrong. So i presume the first is worse even though i never went through it.

I'd probably quit before giving them a chance to fire me anyway if i hated the job that much.
