The real camera wars.
Kinect so far has sold a little less than 5 million units, however, that was when it was still mandatory with every xbox one, now it isnt. PS4 camera sold 900k by march all by its own. now its clear PS4 camera has a lot of catching up to do, but can it manage to do what people would have said to be the impossible just a year ago?
there are some things we should take into account.
- PS4 Camera is cheaper. right now its retailing at 42$ on amazon, Kinect 2.0 will likely be 100$ at the cheapest, so PS4 camera can be found for less than half the price of what kinect will be (stand alone). (PS4 camera is also 42 on amazon's best seller chart, showing that it is still selling decenlty)
- Kinect will still have a 500$ XB1 bundle that is sold everwhere. PS4 isnt bundling the camera much or at all.
- Microsoft is pushing Kinect more now. microsoft is still marketing the kinect stronger than Sony is marketing its camera. MS is also trying to push kinect as much as possible.
- Project Morphous is coming. PM will need the camera for head tracking, so if VR takes off, this just might push the PS4 Camera above the Kinect.
- "Kinect" is a much stronger brand name. Microsoft has most probably spend over 1 billion marketing the kinect as a brand, with 500M just at launch of the kinect one.
- PS4 is crushing the XB1 in sales. just a few weeks after a price cut and PS4 is already back to outseling XB1 with a ratio around 2:1 . The PS4 camera will have a bigger install base to sell to.
- Kinect has skype. i can see this probably being a selling point to some. even if its a very little amount of people.
- Mircosoft as a company is a joke. Yes a Joke, its a cruel prank made by steve jobs and bill gates to create countless fanboy wars for as long as man kind lives, Microsoft and Apple are in fact one company led by no other than Rick Astley.
- PS4 Camera sales will be led by both Streaming and Games. the killer app for the PS4 camera so far is twitch streaming, and that will most likely be the killer app for kinect as well, but once Project Morphous comes along gaming will give a push to the camera too becaus VR games will need it. so PS4 camera will both have games and streaming being a selling point. as far as gaming goes for kinect, well, we seen microsofts efforts so far and how bad its been, i doubt it will be any better now thats its dropped from the console itself.
So who will win this very important war?
