Forums - Sales Discussion - Sales of US console games in China - how many are sold here?

One thing that I thought of before was how many US copies of consoles games that are actually sold in China. In the local games shops it's about 50/50 HK and US releases, to put it simple. There are also EU and JP versions but they are not too many, so perhaps 40% HK, 40% US, 10% EU and 10% JP or something.

We all also know that the console gaming in China is very very small, but the population is also very big. We also know that many buy or download pirated games, which takes away a part of what could have been sold games. And there's no official numbers to get, since it's all imports. So we have nothing really to go on at all.

But, just out of curiosity, how many US copies do you think are sold in China? Any guess is as good as the next, so don't be shy. :)

We could take take GTA 5 as an example, as it's a popular game here too. It sold 5.67(PS3) million in North America. How many of those do you think could have been sold in China?

My guess, based on nothing really, would be 50-100 000 copies, and thus about a total of 200 000 copies of all regions(HK, JP, US, EU) sold in mainland China.

It depends on what games get over there since Censorship is still a large issue

You can find any imported game here. :)

GTA V sold 13 million in North America. Xbox 360 is a console you know.

I was looking at PS3 sales of GTA 5 in North America. I doubt many Xbox 360 versions of that game were sold here at all.

Yes I noticed that, but that still doesn't take away from the fact that it sold 7.8m more in North America than what you posted. Seeing as how "PS3" isn't mentioned anywhere in the OP I thought you meant all consoles.

Edited my post.

So what's your guess?

Between 150k-200k most likely since you say its popular there.

I think it's really small. There are lots and lots of black markets around the world that import from the us. 50k in China could mean another 50k in a bunch of other countries. Really just a guess from me too but I'd say 10k from US.
Considering you live there though, I think your guess might be closer to the truth ;)

I think I've posted something about this earlier....

I think both the UK and US markets are actually smaller than most people think as those are the two markets where there are a lot of games being sold to people from other countries.
Its very common for many gamers in Europe (at least in Northern Europe) to buy from the UK web shops like amazon.co.uk.
I think it would be very interesting to try to get some numbers from online retailers like amazon.
