Forums - Gaming Discussion - 2013 is an incredible year for classic material

When a film or game is released, you know if it's considered a classic or not. It seems that this year is chock full of that type of material.

When I say classic, I mean something that is going to have a long-term impact on people for a LONG time..years..maybe decades....for example: GTA 4, Super Mario 64, Super Smash Bros Melee, LOZ: Ocarina of time, etc. etc.

Films:

-Man of Steel - Brand new Superman movie? C'mon..that's awesome.

-Oz the Great and Powerful - We all know it's the first film of a trilogy....I predict that the third film will be a remake of The Wizard of Oz.

Games:

-The Last of Us - C'mon. It's a classic. Cannot deny this.

-GTA 5 - A game that is going to entertain many people for many years. I know it'll eventually get released on every system possible...with GTA Online being a cross-platform experience. Probably won't go that far...but I wish. Nonetheless, GTA 5 is going to be big for a while.

-Wind Waker HD - Some are complaining about it just being a remake, but it's the definitive version...it brings the old gameplay to a new level...looks and just feels better. Such a classic game...and it's so much better now.

-Super Mario 3D World - I know it isn't released yet, but c'mon. Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS is a classic. Some might disagree with that because they think it follows the same path as the Galaxy series. These are experimental games...they are trying to implement so many addictive gameplay aspects in the game. And even though there is no gravity or planet/galaxy stuff...the gameplay elements aren't too much different. Definitely not the same, but not entirely different. When Nintendo announced Super Mario Galaxy 2, people thought it was going to be awful. I remember. Then after it releases, it goes on to be one of the best games of all time. I believe Super Mario 3D World will receive a 96/100 on metacritic..going on to become one of the best Mario games of all time...right under Galaxy  and Galaxy 2. It'll go on to become a classic...families will have an extreme amount of fun playing multplayer. It's a matter of time before Super Mario Online World is announced(I wish).

-Rayman Legends - Obviously a classic. The gameplay is addictive...it's entertaining and doesn't get old..the artstyle is beautiful. 10/10.

What other classics do you think were released this year?

Fire Emblem: Awakening, Pokemon X and Y(going to be), and Tales of Xillia... Probably three of my favorite JRPGs this year because they had fresh ideas and introduced new yet effictive machnics which made the franchises feel fresh

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Tales of Xillia and Ni No Kuni are classics imo.

You're list seems off...

Film: None, let's be realistic.

Games:
Last of us
Beyond
GT6
P3

the op list seems fine.. I'll add

movies:
gi joe retaliation - i mean this totally redeemed the pitiful pathetic miserable sickening verrrry bad first movie. Great cast, good acting, the right characters. I had a lot of fun and i'm sure fans will remember it as a classic.

games:
ducktales remastered - the voice acting and the graphical polish make tis one a no brainer. Gameplay was already rock solid. Now it's a must have for any fan of platformers. It looks better than a cartoon waaay better. The challenge! The challenge makes Duck Tales Remastered greater then any of the NSMB games.

tales of mystara online - Never played this till now and what can i say...WOW! The special moves, multiple paths, online multiplayer, true d&d style art. If you are lucky to have a friend on Miiverse play this together. Or friend me and megadrive08. We'll join you.

luigi's mansion darkmoon - fun & hilarious. There's little touches of Master gamecraft everywhere in darkmoon. LMDM is going to be the game that gets pointed to when ppl say, "luigi is just as big as mario"

Idk about classics, but definitely one of the best years for quality software in gaming.

Guacamelee and Beyond are the only games from this year that left some impact on me (I've only played Beyond's demo, but I know that I'll like it). Hopefully I'll add Drag-on Dragoon 3 and Tales of Xillia on this list soon.

TLOU and GTAV did nothing for me.

Am I the only one who really didn't like the Last of Us that much? Super well made game, and I love Naughty Dog as much as anyone, but I found it about as repetitive as the first Assassin's Creed game. It's the same things over and over. It's linear as hell, no exploring or anything, the enemies are easy except for those stupid blind ones that kill you in one hit, no puzzles or real thinking like in Uncharted 1, ... I dunno great game and I love the stealth, but could have been better if you ask me. Granted, I never finished it, but I put in a good 10+ hours so enough to form a decent opinion.

The only classic this year is The Wonderful 101.

Maybe Super Mario 3D World will be one, I dunno.(will have to feel like a new incarnation of old mario)

You aren't allowed to call something a classic until it's older than you were when it was released.
