Forums - Gaming Discussion - PS4 will win next-gen because of price

$100 is a lot for the majority of gamers. History has shown that price combined with a strong brand name leads to increased marketshare. So lets look at some of these past consoles and why they succedeed.

PS2 - Successor to the PS1 which sold very well and was much more popular than the N64. Affordable price + DVD Player capabilities made this a must-have console.

Xbox 360 - Successor to the rapidly rising Xbox. Although Xbox is seen as the loser in the 6th gen compared to PS3, it sold well in America considering it was much more expensive and its early focus on online gaming. Xbox 360 took advantage of the success of the Xbox by continuing Xbox Live and growing it to the be leading online gaming network. Oh and they had a huge price advantage and year headstart over the PS3.

PS4 - Successor to the PS3. Although the PS3 had lots of problems and was outsold by the competition, it still manage to sell over 77million consoles(so far). PS4 fixes all the mistakes with the PS3 and the still strong Playstation brand combined with the price advantage over Xbox and the 3rd party support advantage over Wii U, its safe to say the PS4 will be the leading console in all markets.

If the XB1 has a shot at winning then it will be in the US. I don't see it outselling the PS4 worldwide. Even in the US it will be tough for them to beat the PS4 especially with the current price tag.

Probably, but how many units which each company move lifetime? That's what I'm wondering.

How many of these threads do we need? I want some guesses on how much you think it will sell at least.

I don't think anyone in their right mind sees the x360 as a "loser to the ps3" this gen. Anyways...

Right now the PS4 has a lot going for it. Positive buzz and cheap price point. However it lacks a wow factor. So while i see it outselling its competitors i don't see it growing the market. In fact i see the next gen overall selling less than this gen if things stay as they are now.

Don't also forget that the Xbone has options. If sales are seriously bad then MS will act and they will act fast. They've proven this with Kinect, pricing, bundles, and removing the DRM stuff. They can very easily remove kinect from the bundle...and sell the system without it at ~$100 cheaper.

Although that will be a last resort. Their main priority right now needs to be showing off the added value of the extra cost. They really need to start refocusing on Kinect. To be more specific they need to focus on Kinect Games.

Well, if we're just throwing out estimations just based off of brand recognition and price, I guess I could also say the Wii U will be the best performer of this generation. Even though that is probably not true.

I do see the PS4 being the better console of the PS4/ XB1 match-up, but with so much generation in front of us it's impossible to say for sure what's going to happen. It's ease of development was built to attract third party support, so even if Microsoft has the initial exclusives they don't have the incentives to keep third party devs coming.

That said, the Wii U is my pick for this generation's winner. The PS4 and XB1 innately compete in a living room, and without backwards compatibility they'll compete with the PS3 and 360, too. The Wii U is such a radically different console in design and library, though, that it doesn't directly compete with any console (the Wii least of all.) In fact, it complements some other consoles' functions by providing a second screen. If Nintendo can keep titles flowing out for it without any more delays, it will be this gen's winner.

That is almost of the price of two games, a huge difference in price to many people. Especially, as both now require yearly subscriptions to get the most out of your console. We know people don't want to pay more than they have too. So,i would though PS4 would still do better. Also, Xbox still has scars from it's reveal and E3 that people will never forget. People seem far more impressed by PS4 also, especially in the media. Overall, PS4 will win worldwide but Xbox One could win USA with the right games, but who knows?
