It's literally my favorite game of all time.

1. Chrono Trigger
2. Final Fantasy XIII
3. Final Fantasy IX
4. (TIE) Tales Of Symphonia, Tales Of Abyss
5. (TIE) Final Fantasy X, Persona 3

Any Final Fantasy from IV and beyond are either great or excellent (excluding XI and XIV, haven't played them. Though I played a little bit of XIV at a friend's, pretty good first impression). FFIII is also pretty good, but can get frustrating. I and II should be played only for completion's sake.
And FF Tactics is a damn master-piece. The gameplay is highly addicting and the story is awesome. Crisis Core is also excellent, but one should play (and like) FFVII first to get the maximum out of CC.

Other than that, I honestly haven't played that many jrpgs, sadly. FF is the only big series I've played, I'm yet to play SMT, DQ or Tales. But here are some of my favorites, in no particular order:

- Chrono Trigger (best game ever)
- Grandia 3 (OH THE BATTLE SYSTEM. It doesn't seem to get much love though. It's the only Grandia I've played)
- Ni no Kuni (one of my favorites ever. Should be at least top 5 on the 7th gen, it's truly a FENOMENAL game)
- Brave Story: New Traveler (a pretty fun PSP one. Really, really retro and charming as hell)
- Kingdom Hearts 2 (I really don't care about the series, but this one is ridiculously fun. One of my favorite games on the PS2)
- Rogue Galaxy
- The Legend of Dragoon (one of the most overlooked gems out there, it's one of the best games of the PS1)
- Digimon World Dawn (addicting! I find it better than Pokemon Platinum)


So even though I haven't played that many, I seem to make pretty good choices when playing one. There are three I've beem DYING to play though: Eternal Sonata, Bravely Default and Type-0. The latter for lack of localization, BD for lack of 3DS and Eternal Sonata because I wasn't able to buy it yet =(
Even worse, I favored Folklore over it a few years ago. Decent/average game by the way, with some flaws that make it much worse than it really is. A sequel could easily fix those problems. But Eternal Sonata seems soooo much better, this decision kills me to this day.

EDIT: and about a top 5... well, that's tough... I'm ignoring the FF series here, for the sake of variety.
