Please, don't blow it out of proportions. CoD sold good this gen, but not out of this world. For one, they don't do 30m+ each year. Two, both Mario and the 'Wii' series sold more than CoD this gen and three, CoD definitely didn't outsell the combined total of either the GameCube or the XBox. |
Money-wise CoD does destroy any other franchises out there. And it's not even close honestly.
I don't understand the COD hate. It's an easy to play, always high quality, big budget game. The same for Mario. That's why people, who would not be playing games anyway, playing those games. It doesn't eat sales from other games (besides COD clones like the new Medal of Honor, Homefront, etc.) Even the similar high quality military FPS games profited from it, especially Battlefield. So why the hate? It makes the industry bigger, and those people may try other games and hopefully other genres.
I do understand, that there are idiotic developers/publishers, who want their game to be more action oriented, because of the COD-love, like Capcom with the Resident Evil series or EA with the Dead Space games. But these developers simply didn't want to make a unique game, their vision, they use Activision's/IW's/Treyarch's vision. (hehe Activision's vision... sry, personal moment.) They just wanted to be like COD, and that's what makes them clones. I don't think if there would be no COD, RE6 would've been good. They would've used another franchise, and didn't make a game they like. So don't hate COD, or the developers. Hate the idiots, who don't make games, just copy them.
4 Call of Duty: Black Ops II Activision 10.00

80 Need for Speed: Most Wanted Electronic Arts 1.80

159 One Piece Pirate Musou Namco Bandai Games 1.03
160 Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City Capcom 1.03
182 WWE '13 THQ 0.94
All 1 million+ 2012 released PS3 games (and WWE '13 for reference of highest under 1 million seller) so 16 games.
Of which the following failed to meet publisher expectations.
51 Resident Evil 6 Capcom 2.41
98 Hitman: Absolution Square Enix 1.52
125 Max Payne 3 Take-Two Interactive 1.24
160 Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City Capcom 1.03
while 5 of the remaining are copy-paste sport games.
No wonder people think a crash is coming if EA with a quarter of the top selling games can't make money!

Not the same. Have you ever heard about Respawn Entertainment?
I own CoD: MW and MW2 - coz they were developed by people who invented CoD.
MW3 is labeled with Infinity Ward logo, but after MW2 core of IW emploees started new studio (go and find "why?" by your own).
So - yes I'm CoD fan. Yes - I hate CoD (actually I hate Activision for what they done with the CoD creators and the game it self).
To me CoD is sort of a McDonalds FPS. They are making money - not games.
Mario franchise on the other hand is treated with love and respect for both - game and gamers.

Well I can say I have friends that plays more CoD than I play all my games together... I think he is a hardcore gamer... just because he plays only CoD didn't make it a worst gamer than me. |
Well theres no real definition for the term hardcore, but I typically look at it as gaming enthusiats. The type who are well informed, egaged with the industry and passionate about the medium. But I think the term term casual/core gets thrown about to much. People should start using uniformed/informed, I think its a bit more specific when talking about people like this, who are probably the single largest demographic in the industry. Obviously playing very few games doesn't make you uniformed but I think its normaly telling of the range of games they're aware of.
I know people who only play sims but they love, also know a few grown men who only play pokemon lol. I don't anywould describe themselfs as a hardcore gamer.
As too people who think the next CoD won't break 10 million That is your faulty opinion which will turn out to be completly wrong as on a week to week basis Blops2 is out selling Blops1 and MW2. If the next CoD is MW4 it will be the fastest selling CoD yet bet on it!
