I think the Steambox on linux is a great idea. Most major game engines have been ported, in Unity for example you click a button and it generates a linux version of the game. The linux underpinning gives steam a robust, secure OS with thousands of free apps at no cost and minimal development for steam. A windows steambox would be virus prone, carry OEM OS costs, have more overhead in terms of memory and processing power.

I have been using the beta version of steam on linux and it is looking very good, with excellent performance. Steam's internal testing has shown higher frame rates for the same game on the same hardware using linux.

I think the steam box is a serious challenger and will probably be my nintendo + 1 console for this gen.
