Modern DDR3 RAM delivers some 10-20GB/s of bandwidth. Consoles usually come with the same kind of RAM used on GPUs, but for general purpose; for the next generation, bar some rumors that have Durango using way more RAM but standard DDR3 in nature, that should be at least 100 GB/s of bandwidth; enough to account for the deficit on sheer volume, I think, not to mention the lack of other kinds of processes running simultaneously. 

It's kinda easy to estimate, really. Multiply the data rate for the width of the module in bytes to get the value in GB/s. DDR3 has an 8 bytes module and effective transfer rates of 1000-2000 MHz; GDDR5 uses 32 or 64 bytes at 3000-4000 MHz. It's rough and there's more to it, but that's about it...

Oh wow I didn't read that it was GDDR5. That will be insane. I honestly think that's a mistake though. Even my gtx 670 only has 2gb.

edit: I can still see this being a losing situation for Sony though. Microsoft can easily advertise that the next Xbox has double the ram as the ps3 even though it is only DDR3. The masses won't know the difference between GDDR5 and DDR3 so obviously they will be fooled to think Xbox memory is better.

Based on the source that I trust right now.

So for a person who knows very little about computer specs, how is the PS4 going to be in that department? Can it run games like Skyrim and Battlefield 3 on PC level graphics (ultra settings)? Also there was a rumour that next Xbox is 8 cores and 8 gb ram or something...Is that a big difference?

Funny you should mention that because I actually saw few posters speculating BF3 on Ultra should be possible with this system. 

oh and 8GB ram for `durango (rumored) to be 8GB ddr3 ram. So it's slower but more. I read some comparisons between the possibilities of the two and it sounds like both are great but with different strengths. So both systems should be beasting some impressive performance :D

If the report is true and dev kits only shipped late late year...theres no way it launches this year as its only 1 year to develop the launch games. That is at the same time really bad for Sony as its garanteed that the 720 is gonna launch this year (given the countdown to E3 and the fact that there have been hardly any Xbox exclusive of late).

Seems like Sony is gonna be too late to the race again... that is worrying.
