Forums - Gaming Discussion - NPD: In 2013, tablets will outsell notebooks

I helped with this trend. I think they are really great devices for just about anything. I bought two tablets in the past two months, one 7" and one 10". They don't have a sim chip or anything. One I use regularly for sketching and taking notes (it has pressure pen support)

They stay by my bed and the 10" stays in a dock. Gets carried with me around the house all day for music and videos. It's docked at my computer right now... I take one to the bath so I can listen to music/podcasts... sometimes listen to IGN podcasts while bathing.

On the other hand, I have a laptop that still handles Photoshop very well and I have a portable tab that I can still paint on it... but God it is heavy, it's an HP that likes to overheat too. I hate having to hook it up, unhook it up, put everything away... but when I get sick, it's near my bed. Or when I go to repair friend's computers and have to look up/download anything over 4G/wifi...

In short, I have a monster desktop with dual screen. I have a middle of the road laptop that has 7, does what it needs to do. And then I have tablets which I use more than those... this forum look and works pretty well on it aside from a few quirks here and there.

And I mean, tablets are really affordable compared to a high end gaming laptop. Not to mention, the battery is awesome with everything you can do. I don't see me replacing my 10" in a few years and I paid $450 for it. If they come out with one with much more fluid Wacom support in it, I'll considering jumping on that, but I'm not upgrading for a few years if I can help it.

I'm not surprised. For me, personally, Personally, I don't really see why I would need a laptop when desktops are better for home use and tablets have superior portability.

I'm right there with you, destop for home/office, tablet for mobility.

Even those who need a laptop for work often end up wanting a 7-8" device because reading is so much better on a tablet.

With the actual nature of the market, I'm not sure this is as significant as people will think ...

I have a 5 year old laptop that, other than the $25 battery I had to buy, still works really well for what I use it for and a 18 month old tablet that (after a few OS updates) is now painfully slow to simply browse the web. I have noticed that people are replacing their tablets every 12 to 18 months, while their desktops and laptops are being released every 5+ years; and, while I have seen no studies to demonstrate this, I think this is far more common than people would assume.

In other words, simply outselling them doesn't mean that tablets have replaced laptops

That's just another sign of disruption. PCs have been overserving people's needs since Intel's Core 2, while tablets have been improving rapidly in ways which are meaningful to customers.

Tablets have already destroyed the netbook market. They won't destroy laptops and desktops, but they're going to keep on eroding them until a new form of computing comes along to displace both.
