Forums - Sony Discussion - Why PS4 needs to play PS3 games

Well, I think Sony figured out they could get away with not including it this gen and will probably repeat that next gen as well. Personally, I think it was a mistake for sony to remove backwards compatibility, because it freed up all those ps2 owners to buy a 360 instead if they wanted to.

The reason why I think Sony is going to forgo the backwards compatibility next gen is the cell processor. No way is Sony going to repeat the development discrepancy between platforms again. They are going to go with something easier to program for. Without the cell, it will be impossible to backwards compatibility, at least from a hardware perspective. They could go the 360 route and do software emulation, but it was difficult to do that with xbox games, I can only imagine how much more difficult it would be for ps3 games....

Around the Network

I was pretty cheesed when I found out BC was taken out of ps3,
I was hoping to play some ps2 games I missed out on, but I'm hoping they wouldn't Make such mistake twice

Why is Sony doing this? Wasn't the PS3 backwards compatible with PS2 games, when the PS3 first came out?

1st of all, you're forgetting that all PS3 have backwards compatibility....PS1, but that's still B/C.

2nd, you're not factoring in the online store that Sony has to carry over, and is planning to make mainstream (that's why they are planning the name change to SEN).

Unlike with the PS2 to the PS3, The PS4 has an online network that Sony has to make sure that everyone has access to the things they've already bought.

Whether they make it accessible through GAIKAI or some rumored dongle thing, I'm confident that it, in some form or another, will be possible.   I'm not really talking about the disk based games.   But regarding all of the download games, movies, TV shows, music, etc that was purchased in Sony's online store, PS4 simply has to be.

I agree. Not because I care about it personally, but because it'll help sales. When the PS4 first releases, obviously its going to have a fairly small library. But with BC, it'll have access to all of the PS3 library. I think its safe to say this will entice a lot more buyers since they already know they'll have some games for it.

The problem I see for Sony is whether they can afford it and whether its worth its cost. I'm not sure.
