For downloads you can let the ps3 download and install them automatically while you sleep. Instead of using the ps3 controller to shut down the system, go all the way to the left on the xmb and choose turn off system. There you have the option to shut down after downloading (which will do the install as well)

I'll check out that download option next time I have something to download. Still not ideal (since the biggest complaint is having to install separately from downloading), but it alleviates the issue somewhat.

That's the point of that download option, it does the install automatically, then turns the system off.
Of course still not ideal if you want to play it asap, but pretty convenient if you want to queue up a bunch of demos to try out later.
Hopefully they fix it for next gen with a complete overhaul of the file system. It's ridiculous that deleting certain big demos can also take minutes to complete. Or set strict guidelines for developers not to put thousands of little files on the hdd.

That's what I mean - very frequently, I want to play a game ASAP and being forced to go through a lengthy install process on top of the download can be quite tedious.

But if I don't intend/plan to play the game right away, then the solution you've explained is perfect, so thanks for that!
