I'm a big supporter of monarchy.

Why?

That'll bring the death penalty back in South Africa, and - if we're lucky - the king will decide to castrate some of the people here who are just making useless progeny.

The weak always cry for monarchs and dictators when its getting hard. But what do you expect?
That a bunch of germans hiding behind the artificial name Windsor(original Sachsen Coburg Gotha/Witten
mountbatten=origin battenberg)do really care about people in gb ?lol
though they are billionaires they are so shameless to take millions from british people every year.
yes you will get the iron fist, because it is the same old democide trick they are using for centuries.the "order out of chaos" game.

edward 8 abdiction because he fell in love with an ordinary woman?lolol.
nice fairytale. He was a real big nazi and fan of hitler.=no abdiction.he was forced to quit his "job".

They're not German and even if they were you shouldn't be racist.

Billionairre? She's a trillionairre. She still gets up at 6am everyday to read and sign all that parliament crap that 4 of the most successful countries ever send her.

No doubt you're a kermit or some other peon l'euro.

The royal family has been German since George I became king in 1714. He was a Hanover. and that remained until Queen Victoria, but even then afterwards, our monarchs have German blood in them. The only thing that changed was the monarch families name.

However, your aware that after Victoria a lot of the British monarchs married British wives like George the V and George VI. Also, Prince Philip is Greek so there is actually different blood just beyond German and English.

People say our monarch is English but they are really not, we are Scandinavian from the Vikings, French from the William the conqueror, Scottish from the Stuarts, German from the Hanoverians, Greek from Prince Phillip as you say. We are probably a bunch of other nationalities as well.

You do realise the Queen actually has very little say in our political process and it's been like that since 1660. She just welcomes each new democratically elected parliament to session. They have to sign bills for them to become laws and in theory they can refuse but they don't. She can block a law like once, but after that parliament can get rid of her, this hasn't happened for 300 years. She can call general elections within 5 years of the previous one, but in reality this is up to the prime minister. Despite such things, she has very little say in British politics, she is just the head of state, head of the armed forces and the COE, but has little power in any of them.

Despite what you think of them, tourists from around the world come to London, just to see Buckingham palace. That is key to our local economy, as people will go to other attractions while in London. She is Britain's symbol and is recognisable worldwide, a bit like how Egypt is known for it's Pyramids or how Las Vegas is known for it's casinos, it's the same thing. The monarchy is to ingrained in our history to ever replace.

There must be a reason why some countries in the commonwealth like Australia and Canada continue to have the queen as the head of state, even though they don't have to

Monarchy makes countries attractive. Even countries who don't have a monarchy anymore still attract many tourists to check out the palaces etc...(think France). It also creates an kind of unity between those countries.

Edward VII - Born to rule. Reign 1901-1910.

George V - Second son

Edward VIII - eldest son, abdication

George VI - second son

Elizabeth II - eldest child of second son, could have been demoted by a male.

? Charles ? likely to be the first monarch "born to rule" in 113+ years.

Just as the world economy collapses we (Can/Aus/NZ/UK) get to use our built in dictator to take care of the mess with the necessary iron fist.

What will the rest of the world do?

To fix the highway system, they could crush you under their boot, and then use your bones as meal to bulk up the mixture for the roads.  I would suggest you do research into spontaneous order and see how dictators are not competent enough to be able to account for all changes, and why centalized planning sucks and doesn't work.

only if you hate democracy and find unity in stupidity.

By any measure the world's axis is moving away from western democracies and towards centralized, state planned economies and monopolized political systems, though. I think you are likely to change your opinion when, less than two decades from now, countries who follow these ideals fall from 70% to 30% of the planet's economy when compared to the beginning of the millenium - a total reversal in their importance towards the world! This is going to be harsh to the mindset and egos of some indeed. The thing is, as long as a strong and reasonable rule of law is mantained, that's all you are going to need, really. His argument, although simple, is sound.

Our Queen fulfills all the roles of a President as head of state with the same costs, but also creates tourism and promotes the UK brand worldwide. There's no good economic argument for replacement, and as long as she has no power and doesn't speak out on day-to-day politics I'm OK with it.
