Forums - Sony Discussion - SONY set to JUNK status

I'm really saddened by this as Sony has already cut 10,000 people off its workforce and it seems more are coming judging by the above. I can't imagine the shock of those who are losing their jobs as they have families, bills, mortgage to pay, it's just bad. Sony is just too scattered. It needs to condense and be smaller. Many see Sony as an entertainment company (music, movies, gaming). Long are the days where consumers see Sony as a electronics company, Samsung has taken the reigns. Keep the profitable businesses which include Sony Financial, Sony Music, Sony Entertainment (Columbia) and Sony Computer Entertainment. Sell the other non-profitable assets like they did for its chemical business to the government.

Furthermore, there is no need for a new PS4 currently. PS3 has at least 2 more years in front of it and it is profitable. Showcase the PS4 console in 2013 and release it in November of 2014.

WTF???

More than 300 million consoles sold. PS3 already ahead of 360  and set for 100+ million. Having best exclusives on console.

PS is probably the best thing about Sony.

I think there will not be vita 2. Since they bought ericsson. Xperia play 2 will come in few years.

PS brand is the most highly rated and respected consoles in gaming.

they could probably lower the TV division, or work with google on google tv.

but not the gaming division, that is one of their strong points.

When a division that has lost so much money during this generation is considered one of your strong points, you know that company is really in a bad shape.

The one that has nothing to do with electronics.

THX @ Kowe for busting another myth!

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Absolutely. What is a console without exclusive games. That is reason core gamers like and respect PS.

The games division, though, helps other sectors, like movies and music, offering Sony the opportunity of running its own market for them, while TVs, OTOH, besides losing tons of money in the mid and low range, don't offer that advantage, as TVs are totally general purpose devices, it doesn't make any difference for movies and music markets whether the TV is Sony or not, so cutting TVs, completeley, or where they lose money, makes sense a lot more than cutting consoles, that just need to have R&D costs kept under control, so that each new model become profitable within an acceptable time.
As for PS4, the best choice for Sony will be to keep a low profile: focus on PS3 late life, with low costs and high profit margin, as long as possible, design PS4 using standard components, and to be just a little more powerful than competitors (mainly having some more RAM), but launch it last, one year after XB720, so having lower costs at launch.
