Forums - Nintendo Discussion - So you can actually store and run Wii U games from an SD card.

Props to Shokio for trying this out.

It's a workaround but I think if you are not planning to go fully digital(you never go fully digital...) this could be a relatively cheap solution. A reader like this costs maybe 5$, I got one flying around since the one built into my PC didn't read SDXC cards.

As I recall, the Nintendo official didn't say you couldn't, only that it "wasn't recommended."

Perhaps what he meant is that some SD cards are sluggish and unreliable, so your milage may vary, and Nintendo isn't going to guarantee a good experience if they can't guarantee reliable hardware.

I thought you couldn't.

I don't have/want an SD that big anyways, I prefer HDDs.

No, the thing that was not recommended was to use an HDD without a Y USB cable. Afaik the SD card slot on the console doesn't allow you to store Wii U data on an SD card.

Looks like Shokio is kinda famous on this site lol

Good news for people who prefer SD cards, specially for small indie games. I planning to use an external HDD so this doesn't really matter to me :p

I wonder if this could cut down loading times compared to an HDD. I mean I know that SSD's load faster but would the USB 2.0 bottleneck this advantage? I also like that SD cards don't make any sound and use way less power. I can't afford a real SSD drive yet so I think this is a neat way to expand the storage space by 16 or 32 GB for cheap.

While that is interesting... is it cost effective? Isn't a HDD far cheaper for the greater storage?

Now what about usb flash drives.

I thought SD card slot was mainly for the people that did the Wii - Wii U transfer. Since the Wii channel still has the SD channel on the Wii U this allows people that bought a shitload of VC/WiiWare games to be able to access them from the SD channel (since they set aside the same space (512 MB) for the Wii channel.

Yes but by using a sd adapter the wii U thinks it's a hard drive
