Overall they're just not going to break even, ever. Not even a repeat of PS2's success would be enough to recover what they already lost (there was a thread with all the financial data from Sony's site which proved this).

I believe it was that Sony thought the Playstation division as a whole to be profitable in fiscal 2009 but was not commiting to anything when that was announced; being profitable as a division doesn't even mean the PS3 would be sold at a profit, they would just be losing less on it than they were making on everything else combined.
