Wait... your actually comparing one of the smallest markets in the world, that is an island with a population less than the state of California to the largest buying economy in the world?

Of course its going to cost a lot more to ship it to an island with a FAR smaller consumer market.... just like everything else over there except kangaroo steaks.

It does NOT cost $80 EXTRA per unit to ship something from China and store it here.  An enormous portion of our population is also concentrated in a very small area.

When I said cost a lot more to ship.. I didn't literally mean JUST SHIPPING COSTS. I was referring to the entire process that was laid out more directly by JoelCool7.

I was using ship as a generic term. I probably should have said "sell on an island...."

I meant the same when I said "and store it here."

There is no way in hell it costs anything close to $80 extra.

Then you clearly don't understand the economics behind selling products in different regions.

Why do you think Toyota and Honda both opened up manufacturing plants in the USA? To save them thousands in what it cost to build the same car in Japan and then have it shipped.

The 3DS is about to cost $170 in the USA.  Converted into US Dollars, it is going to cost $275 in Australia AFTER the price cut.

We have a 10% GST (like a VAT) so make that $250.  That is still FAR too big a mark up even taking into account economies of scale.

So fuck that.

tell me about it... The 3ds after the cut is going to cost C174,000 colones in Costa rica...

BTW: 164000 = US$310...

I bought mine for US$360...

I am an economics major and a managing across cultures minor, believe me I get it.

There are (several) fundamental differences in the economic scales of cars and 3DS's, shelf space, transport and warehouse storage to name three.

There is no way it costs Nintendo an extra $80 in marginal cost. to ship 3DS consoles (all of which come to China) and store/market them here.  Not even close.

the Australian minimum wage is much higher, that's why alot of things is expensive.. the price point never worries me anyway.
