Forums - Sales Discussion - Zelda, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, are NOT enough to sell Wii U

seriously WTF is up with the WiiU - DC comparisons?

I'm one of the people who believe the DC's fate was to a strong degree sealed by structural problems within SEGA and their previous 'failures', such as the 32X, but mainly the Saturn. These reasons primarily resulted in a far from financially strong SEGA entering the 6th gen. I believe that the DC could've been sustained, had the Saturn been an overall success and let Sony dominate, particular in Europe (previously a SEGA stronghold, NES and SNES were respectively outsold here by Master System and Mega Drive).

On the other hand, Nintendo is entering the 8th gen having dethroned the PS2 as the best selling console, dominated the 7th generation (though not to the degree of previous market leaders) and making many of the best selling games of all time. Even if the WiiU is a Gamecube esque failure, the WiiU will without a doubt pass at least the 45m mark, due to increased awareness of Nintendo and their consoles. If only a minuscule percentage of new gamers, introduced by the Wii are brand loyal, that's still a shit load of people willing to buy the WiiU.

i agree with all u say but the PS2 has still sold more consoles than Wii

whee, this again. Find somethin' new to talk about, guys. Or, I dunno, go read a book for a change

Yep motion controls is what sold wiis with their cheapness, parents wont be willing to buy an expensive hd console for their families I'm sure.

Your "Tickle me Elmo" reference makes it sound like the Wii was only popular for one holiday and got lucky. Remember, the Wii was not an easy find in stores over a year after it's release, much less lost its popularity prematurely.

Also, you make it sound as if the appeal of the Wii was limited to only children, which is completely false. It definitely appealed to a broader age group (including children and people over 50) than the HD twins.

And the comparison to the Dreamcast, already pointed out by many, is inaccurate. The parallels just aren't there, save for the less powerful hardware than its future competition; something the PS2 also shared...

Why are you predicting the Wii U's doom already?

I don't see the Wii U doing 100 million units, but it won't fail hard like the Dreamcast.

Nintendo was a niche company durning the N64 days, and more so in the GameCube days. They didn't really have the support of anyone besides their die-hard fans. Right now, they have a lot of momentum going from the Wii, and DS. They won't go the GameCube route next gen unless they totally fuck it up. Nintendo will also be trying to get the support of the hardcore, so that will mean extra sales for the Wii U.

Looking at it, it's kind of misleading, but I meant about the DS overtaking PS2 sales on this site.  I don't want to start the whole console definition debate, so I've just changed it to platform.

Was the goal of the Wii to introduce motion controlls or to create a more accessable controller for games?

If the goal was to create a more accessable controller would moving away from the exclusive focus on motion controlls be bad if it translates into games that are more accessable for end users?

The goal was to introduce a more accessible controller, one that isn't full of sticks and buttons. Motion controls weren't the be all, end all for the Wii, they were just a part of a bigger strategy. The goal was to create a new starting line, so that gaming could grow again instead of following the path of selling more to the same established customer base.

The Wii U controller basically is what Nintendo wanted to avoid five years ago, plus a touchscreen. Now this controller could of course be used for games that can entirely be controlled by the touchscreen, but you can have that already on the DS and 3DS. The question then is whether or not the Wii U can offer a significantly improved experience to justify its price point.

RolStoppable, the Wii U controller does have a IR pointer on it.

It's awesome.

Wii U Nintendo Network ID, Borode

XBOX Live ID, Borode

That's why they want more 3rd party support.
