Forums - Gaming Discussion - What would "revived JRPGs" look like, besides larger sales numbers?

The best JRPGs this gen are taking their lessons from WRPGs imo.  Dragon Quest IX, Xenoblade and The Last Story all fall into this camp.

From what I've seen, TLS falls into more of a mix of classic JRPG with Zelda and interesting new ideas, not so much from WRPGs. DQ9 and Xenoblade though, yeah, definitely.

Yeah because FF14 is doing so well with that too right? Squaresoft was great, Square-Enix.... I don't know anymore. Versus 13 is still on pre order though.

The combat feels very "Bioware" imo, but way tighter and faster (but likely less open too).  I'd agree though that no WRPGs are probably the big western influences on TLS... because it's actually Gears of War that is. ;)

Quick aside, but I am SO glad turn based is going the way of the dodo.  If only Horii had stuck to his guns and made DQIX an action RPG... let's hope he's feeling braver for DQX! <3 <3

FF12 was bad, FF13 ranged between mediocrity and good, FF14 was the worst game of all time

I don't know what FF15 will be like, I doubt it will be very good

lol the whole dock thing does feel very TPS doesn't it, that's what I thought too.

They should give FFXV to Kawazu imo.  I'd like to see what sort of crazy punishment the old coot could dish out without being forced to salvage Matsuno's corpse.

The Last Remnant had a lot of good ideas imo, even if it was hampered by UE3.  They should've just made it a SaGa game so it could've actually sold in Japan.

i don 't take FF XIV in consideration because it is an online and made by another team as for FF XIII it was a good game just that but in no means mediocre as for FF  XII say whatever you want it is a masterpiece (and not only check metacritic)in my opinion best FF of all-time as for FF XV i believe in Square-enix and know they won 't dissapoint with this one

Some beliefs are ment to be shattered...

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

The problem with JRPGs is that in reality they were never that popular outside of Japan. dont get me wrong, in the US a good RPG could do half a million, maybe a million. and do better than the Japanese sales. (of course there are exceptions, like FF and Pokemon). so in the US there has been a small but signifiant fan base that has not been well supported this gen, partly due to the console war.

the second problem is the EU, which has never been well supported, this gen we've seen a change in that. but the problem is the JRPG fans in the US have had 2 gens of successive RPGs, the EU is just getting that, so its more difficult to establish fans there imo. plus a lot of JRPGs are not marketed and are generally not accessible to ordinary gamers.

however i think with the widespread proliferlation of WRPGs we can see theres a growing interest and with Dragon Quest, The Last Story, (if its localised) theres a good chance for JRPGs to establish themselves in the EU, and get some good worldwide sales.

PS. i know this isnt totally OT, but this is something i thought to contribute.
