Forums - General Discussion - So is a plague of laziness responsible for the unemployment numbers?

In the US, some people are allowed to be on unemployment for 72 weeks and Obama is trying to extend that to up to another 72 weeks.  That is crazy.  If someone cannot find a job in 2 and 1/2 years, they have serious mental issues and have likely been taking abusing taxpayers and gaming the system all along.  If it was been 6 months for someone, they really need to look at getting two lower paying jobs and working long hours.  The was a time when I had 2 jobs and I know many other people that have done it.  Another thing some people need to do is give up on the dream of going back to their amazing life style.  I live in a house with several roommates because I don't make as much at my current job as I did at an old job.  Adjust with the times people.

It's not just the people on unemployment though, the government must be blamed for allowing people to be on unemployment for so long.  If unemployment innsurance is such a good thing, it should be private insurance like auto insurance.

I was out of work 2 1/2 years before I landed a 3 week assignment in 2009, that went 20-30 hours.  Then nothing happened.  I went about a full year before I happened to land a part-time janitor position... before I ran into back and leg issues that cost me a chance to do it.  In my case, what do you think my Masters does in regards to finding work?

Did the concepts of age discrimination and being overqualified ever occur to you?  In your mind, as seen by your avatar logo, you believe EVERYONE is where they are ONLY because it is their fault.  You reak of this mentality by your post above.

Also, I wanna say this article is out of date.  They approved tax cuts for all and extending unemployment for 13 months.

They didnt approve it - yet. Its in the works, but nothing's been officially approved/passed. I just claimed the last of my initial 26 weeks unemployment benefits today. Normally Id go into Federal unemployment tier 1. Right now, its limbo. Fortunately NJ has a 20 week emergency compensation, so i -should- still be covered until the bill passes. Right now, Democrats are bitter because of all the concessions made for the republican tax breaks, and the dems are threatening to filibuster the bill, which will put the entire unemployed population in danger till the end of January, when more republicans take over.

So... the Democrats, who tried to make it so only the middle tax cuts were debated first because they saw it as such a devestating issue for the republicans to hold it up as to screw them politically... are now holding those up AND unemployment?

What the hell is wrong with democratic leadership?

Obama's desire to do politics differently, and not have a hostile partisan environment, right when the GOP is setting itself up to make Obama fail and become one-term, is what might of happened.  Obama isn't confronting anyone on anything here.   He could of just pushed the middle class tax cuts extension only and have the GOP voted it down, but he didn't.  He compromised, and the Democrats in congress felt left in the wind.  So, they may decide to play hardball here.  I think there is also something where the GOP will still try to stonewall anything else the Democrats want, even if the Democrats felt that dealing with the tax issue would hold things up.

One thing that may be of concern is Obama talking about you caving into people who hold people hostage, if they start killing the hostages.  That is not a good thing to have happen.

As for myself, pardon me for not caring about any unemployment extensions.  I am currently not getting any at this point, so I don't care what they do.  And yes, I am out of work.  I am looking to see if I can piece together some additional money somewhere and also food stamp benefits to get more food.

Shouldn't unemployment extensions get you back on unemployment?  I mean, I guess it doesn't work that way cause you'd be happier if you did, I dunno, despite being out of work i'm not on it either.  Didn't aquire citizenship in the state i'm living in now yet.  I swore I knew someone who was getting unemployment from oregon who had a breach in his coverage until a new extension came through.

I mean, I expect democrats and republicans to stonewall each other, what I don't get is democrats stonewalling something thats 85% what they want, 15% what republicans want and something they pretty much loudly proclaimed was something that was political death to stonewall. (Middle class tax cuts.)

The issue with the stonewalling was that 85% want the middle class tax cuts, but not interested in the tax on the rich being raised.  What should really be dismaying here is that the Republicans, for all their talk of balanced budgets, don't seem to show they care about that, so long as the rich don't have their taxes go up.

Well, in their defense, the wealthy Americans pay the vast majority of the US income taxes and people know far better how to spend their money than the government does.  The problem with balancing the US budget is more of a spending problem then a funding problem, anyway.

Yes, the defense is to take their tax cuts and invest in China, India, or any other place but the United States, so they can supposedly maximize their returns.
