Forums - Sales Discussion - No more 20GB PS3?

Sony probably only launched the 500 dollar model PS3 to reduce the difference in price between the PS3 and the XBox 360. And as long as they don't officially stop production they can still claim it's only 100 dollar more expensive, and with the XBox Elite that difference only gets smaller.

Sony might drop the price of the 60GB to $500 later this year and make the 80GB $550. That would be pretty cool. Maybe Sony could offer a cheap 80GB HDD so 60GB owners can upgrade.

I don't know for sure but isn't the hard drive in the PS3 a standard one? Shouldn't you just be able to buy any you want? Isn't that one good thing for the PS3 compared to the xbox360?

Buy it and pray to the gods of Sigs: Naznatips!

I'm pretty sure any time you crack the case you are voiding the warranty.

you don't have to crack the case to replace the PS3 hard drive. Sony gives you directions on how to change out your HDD

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

Then what would be the point of putting out a 80g model? Just go buy a generic HDD and put it in.

Consumers have not been reacting kindly to Microsoft's pricing strategy on the Elite and on the seperate HD, so I think Sony might be considering some kind of gradated price drop which includes dropping the 20 gig model altogether since they lose even more off of it.  They also don't want to lose to Microsoft in a pissing contest.

It might be something more like 80 gig model at $600 and 60 gig at $550. Just my two cents.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Here's my theory that is pretty much based on nothing. The 20gb model seemed to disappear around February. The Euro launch was in March. They probably started production of the Euro model (which doesn't have the PS2 chip) in February. I think Sony halted production of the 20gb in order to manufacture 60gb US/Japan models and 60gb Euro models. If they had continued to make the 20gb alongside the other two models it would've probably been too expensive and complicated to deal with 3 models. I think that as soon as the US and Japan gets the Euro model (therefore eliminating one model line), we'll see the lower end SKU back for sale everywhere. This would explain why there has been no announcement stating that the lower model is dead because it'll be back soon.

Again, this is all just my theory.

Ah my bad. But that does make me believe that eliminating the 20gb model for not selling is a bunch of baloney.

Do we know how many of the 20gig model Sony made?  They claimed 80/20 but then Sony and most corporate claims aren't worth much.  They probably only produced a very limited number of them so they could say the price of the PS3 was $600/500 to get people to think it was cheaper.  Seeing as that hasn't worked there's no reason to keep two different PS3's on the market.
