Forums - General Discussion - Is Final Cut Express a lot better than Imovie?

I just recently got a Mac and have done most of my video editing on a PC. The Imovie 09 is pretty poor I admit, but I don't want to spend money on something not that's not a huge improvement. Do any of you have Final Cut Express and what's your review on it?

Around the Network

I use it in one of my work places. I generally work with Final Cut Pro though, its just that this work place is pretty cheap.

Express is about a million times better then imove (especially the current version of imovie which is near useless for serious editing).

Its got the exact same interface and works exactly the same way as pro does. So if you're looking at moving up into professional editing within an Apple work flow its a great piece of software to get use to.

Its timeline is simple and easy to work with, it has basically no limit to how many videos and audio files you can have in the timeline at the same time. It has many professional tools for a wide range of things such as low and high pass filters to reduce background noise and decent colour correction tools.

Obviously its tool aren't as good as Pro, but you get what you pay for.

Its only annoyance is that its a resolution locked product. Eg when I create a project I can't specify resolutions that aren't standards and thus its quite inflexiable in that regards (though you an export at whatever funky resolution you want). Howerever thats not a huge problem because of the fact that it supports all the general standards such as pal, ntsc both in 4:3 and 16:9 and its got hd support up to 1080p I believe. Though I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't support 2k and 4k editing. But I doubt thats a problem for you.

EDIT, may I ask waht your editing requirements are. Because if you're not going to be doing anything beyond holiday videos and things of that level then its not worth the upgrade. Unless Imovie shits you and need something more flexiable before you can think properly.

Main videos for youtube and machinimas. The reason I asked is because I currently use Sony Vegas Platinum Pro 9 for my family's PC, but when I go to college, I won't be able to use it so I want to start using a video editing software supported for Mac. The HD looks pretty poor on Imovie due to it trying to force your videos in 960 x 540 when my videos are in 720p/1080i. I use a Sony HDR-CX100 which works well for me. I am defintely going to be buying Final Cut. Most likely buying Express because it's more affordable than Pro. Thanks for helping me out.

No worries.
