game hs improved more now (30 hrs in). It is bettr than DQ8 (ws bettr thn that ages ago), DQ2 and DQ1 for me nw. I thnk it will go higher up th list.

Aftr square-enix hs disappointd me (FF10-2, FF12, DQ8) for th last 6 years now DQIX and FF13 hve made me love them agen. 

I am happy i cn be a fan of this company again and luk fwd to DQX, 3rd bday, Deus Ex and FF Versus XIII.

This game fits the perfect example that Square can still do a great game with a perfect story, towns, npcs, exploration, and gameplay without focusing so much on graphics. The stories in this game are wonderful and can make you feel sympathy for the characters in it.

I'd just like to point out that I think Dragon Quest has always been this way.  Including (and especially) Dragon Quest VIII.  And since Dragon Quest has been a series which has only recently been done under the 'SquareEnix' brand (from DQVIII and on), its not so much an exception to the rule, but a standard that this series has been upholding while making the transition from 'Enix' to 'SquareEnix'.

I'd just like to point out that I think Dragon Quest has always been this way.  Including (and especially) Dragon Quest VIII.  And since Dragon Quest has been a series which has only recently been done under the 'SquareEnix' brand (from DQVIII and on), its not so much an exception to the rule, but a standard that this series has been upholding while making the transition from 'Enix' to 'SquareEnix'.

So since I'm really liking Dragon Quest IX right now, should I pick up IV and V? I know they don't allow you to create your own party members and customise them the way you like, but if I'm enjoying the exploring and sidequesting then, those games are pretty similar in that regard?

I extremely recomend both IV and V and VI when it releases in the west. I am planning on buying IV and V this week to add to my Dragon Quest collection.

I recommend Dragon Quest V, vehemently. To me, it's the best Dragon Quest out there, and one of the best stories ever created for a RPG.

Absolutely.  But not because it'll be the exact same thing as Dragon Quest IX.  More because they're unique experiences outside of Drago nQuest IX while still focusing on the exploration and gameplay Dragon Quest is known for.  Dragon Quest IX focuses a lot on the concepts Dragon Quest III and VIII established.  Dragon Quest IV and V tried to focus more on story (while still keeping a ton of exploration and gameplay intact).
