Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 Already Ahead of 360?

A blog/An opinion from a poster on a gaming forum site is not an official/reliable source of information.

Shipments as of December 31, 2009 were 33 million PS3 to 39 million XBox 360s.

Is the thread's sole purpose to troll the XBox 360 and its owners and start a flame war?

@Bolded- Of course. What possible legitimate reason could the OP have had to repost a random forum post full of bad math and misconceptions? He's not an idiot.

They only company I'm aware of that monitors active use (in the US) is Neilsen. And they don't release userbase figures (just average hours of use monthly).

Well the obvious mistake with his logic is that all of the original 360's are out of warranty, this isn't true. When a 2005 360 is replaced by ms within the 3 year warranty, the warranty is renewed for another three years, many people are not aware of this and it leads to the thought process of this article.

my 2005 360 RRod in 2007, and it's new warranty covers it until Sept of this year.

The OP should consider this before buying into the article's flawed thinking.

Replacement consoles are still sales. You can't just subtract them and forget about them. Even if this article is right and 9 million 360 sales are replacements that doesn't change anything.

This is not correct, replacement console are not counted as sold by MS.

Yeah, most manufacturers extend warranty renewals after service.  Nintendo also does it with their systems (1 year) as does Sony (3 months).

Got an official source for this? A quick search on google brought up several statements that the original warranty stays in effect and is not prologed for another 3 years. Which would make sense, because otherwise you could get your 360 replaced for an infinite period.

"Well certainly with the Xbox 360, we had some challenges at the launch. Once we identified that we took control of it. We wanted to do it right by our customers. Our customers are very important to us." -Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb (10/2013). Note: RRoD was fixed with the Jasper-revision 3 years after the launch of 360

"People don't pay attention to a lot of the details."-Yusuf Mehdi explaining why Xbone DRM scheme would succeed

"Fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity; it's called Xbox 360,”-Don Mattrick

"The region locking of the 3DS wasn't done for profits on games"-MDMAlliance

This thread made me question why humanity is still in existence...

Here are just a few of the reasons why this is 99% wrong.

1. Attach rate (especially since you can pirate games on the 360)

2. 3 year warranty

3. A console sold is a console sold....there's no way to spin that

4. Attach rate

5. The 360's fail rate is NOT 40%, its way way way way way way less

6. Attach rate

7. When MS says something like 39 million xbox 360's sold they mean SOLD (To retailers) not given away as the occasional replacement

8. Attach rate

9. Attach rate

10. Did I mention the freakin Attach rate????!

Tis a pointless exorcise anyway. We will never know so what is the point.

Oh and scat398 Please back things like that up.

assumption is the mother of all f**k ups

You really can't use this kind of logic to determine install bases.  Unfortunately, you just have to go based of sold figures because there are too many variables.  Do I personally THINK that the gap is less than 5.25 million?  Yes, but no way to prove it.  Plus it doesn't take into account owners that own more than one of the same console.  For example, I skew ps3 numbers...I own FOUR PS3s and only one 360.  (Because I have ps3s at multiple locations...home living room, home bedroom, lake house, and my clubhouse.)  But I definitely don't buy 4 copies of every ps3 game...just one.  So I end up hurting the attach rate of the ps3.
