the method of reporting hardware and software unit sales has been changed from production shipments (b) to recorded sales (a)

What does this mean.  Since it would be highly inaccurate for financial reporting to change to sold through to consumers I dont believe that is what it means.  Did Sony return to recording sales once items are produced and shipped to Sony warehouses even though they have not yet been ordered by retailers?

if sony's report is the end of dec...isnt ps3 undertracked by a lot?

yes 2 million ps3's sitting around is way too much, especially with some places having shortages, i still think 32.5(to us gamers) million for ps3 and that's me being as neutral as possible.

Shipped also includes consoles which have been sold but not dispatched, consoles on the boat and consoles within warehouses awaiting to be dispatched to stores.

i know, but i still think 2 million whether they be on shelves or in warehouses is too high!!

Yeah especially considering that VGC had "only" 2 million Xbox360 sitting around as of December 31, while MS console has usually more shelf space than PS3 in NA/Europe (therefore more stock) and that PS3 consistently outsold the 360 in december/january.

Who do you think has more shelf space in Japan?  Realize that the PS3 sold close to 250K in Japan and the 360 close to 20K in Japan since the beginning of 2010 and nearly all of these would all have been shipped in 2009.

Good results for Sony.

The main problem they were having in recent years were the losses from selling the PS3 below production costs. Luckily PS2/PSP sales were still good to cover up a lot of the losses.

The PS3 slim seems to have fixed this cost problem. Even with a drop in PS2/PSP, and a $100 PS3 price cut, an ongoing recession, and horrible exchange rates, the division was still profitable. This very good new for Sony.

Very good for PS3, finally there will be a raise this year!

No, I think it's just in refrence to the fact that they changed this mid generation... from production numbers to numbers sold to stores.

So that any number before June 30th, 2007 were numbers that were produced in Sony factories and shipped to Sony warehouses.  While the numbers after that were the numbers of sold to retailers.

Remember the division with games was profitable lasy year in Q3 because of the increased software and accessory sales which overcame PS3 hardware losses. Truly wont know how soon division will be profitable on a regular basis for awhile yet.

Even ioi and Source admit it but I think the big shipped to sold discrepencies here are coming from other others. I doubt only 1.5 million PS3s have sold in all of mainland Asia, oceania, the Middle East, Iceland and Africa. The Middle east alone, which is probably the smallest portion of that list other than Iceland, has sold 450k PS3s. Although we don't have numbers for it, the fact that South Korea is about 10% the size of Japan and there are 1 million Wiis there would suggest that numbers there are in the 350k-450k range as well.

Proudest Platinums:
1. Gran Turismo 5
2. Persona 4 Arena
3. Wipeout HD
4. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
5. Super Street Fighter 4

Bottomline, we can all agree on is that PS3 is most definitely undertracked.

Why?  Apparently when the Sony exec said they sold 31 million consoles they meant sellthrough.

2.5 million PS3's isn't THAT hard to believe out there.

That guy is so WRONG on many levels.

"I mean, we've got 31 million [units sold] worldwide right now - they've got 39 million [units sold]. I don't even need to go out 10 years," he quipped.

1.) He compares PS3 numbers by the end of January 2010 with x360 numbers by the of December 2009.

2.) He compares PS3 numbers sold to consumer with x360 numbers shipped to retailers.

3.) This would mean, that PS3 sales by the end of December 2009 are : 31m(from that guy) - 906k(VGC PS3 WW January sales) = 30.1m with 3.42m still sitting at retailers, which is totally ridiculous.

The only conclusion, his numbers are OUTDATED.

So VGC will adjust totals due to some Nintendo graphs but not due to official financial results? Not a chance there is a 3 million difference between shipped/sold at the end of December.

This difference in shipped/shipping and sold isnt anywhere near as serious as people think:

The PS3 has sold 1.2m, averaging 300k per week since the end of 2009.

The 360 has sold 0.81m averaging 202k per week since the end of 2009.

The PS3 shipped v VGC is around 2.8m or 9 weeks stock

The 360 shiped v VGC is around 1.9m or 9 weeks stock

Is this hard to believe still?

How does what happened in January have anything to do with a 3 million shipped/sold difference at the end of December?  Not a chance there was 3 million on retail shelves at the end of December.
