AUS is by the same guy as Towerfall.

No I haven't seen that before, looks promising. I'll play it later this week.

Which one do you think is better, Banjo-Kazooie or Banjo-Tooie?

    Very hard question.

Kazooie obviously invented the gameplay and world.

Tooie had a better soundtrack and was extremely ambitious in scope, but had weaker moment-to-moment gameplay in some cases.

I think I have to give the edge to Tooie.

Hey soleron, I wanted to ask your opinion about the xeon phi.

It's cool, but it's only worth looking at because Intel has such a process lead.

They'll never make money on it, it's far too big and expensive, including on the R&D side. But that's not the point.

I'm not sure that anyone needs hundreds of tiny x86 cores right now, but if you do it's perfect.

    on 22 January 2014

You know it's die size ? If so then tell me. I'm very curious as to why you claim they'll never make money on it when it's selling at around $2000 to $3000 dollars. Sure it doesn't compare to the K40 and K20X profit margins and such but at that price point as well as even factoring in 22nm process node, I'm almost sure intel has to have made some profit even if it were little.

The xeon phi is primarily aimed at HPC workloads. As long as there's an embarrassingly parallel situation then xeon phi is always there to help but that also includes GPUs I guess.

    on 22 January 2014

Because at that price, they won't sell enough to cover the multi-billion R&D costs.

I definitely want to see what Samsung or AMD can do with lots of ARM cores plus a decent interconnect. It ought to be more efficient on power and space than x86, but the process will be older.

    on 22 January 2014

Oh right ... I almost forgot the failed project on larrabee they had initially spent on and they have to recoup on that, right ?

Another question, when do you think GF will ready it's 20nm process for mass production ?

At this point I'd be wary of AMD because kaveri was a big disappointment but if software developers aren't going to listen to AMD I hope to god that their going to listen on AMD's partners who are much bigger than AMD.

    on 22 January 2014

Yeah. It's all the same project.

I don't expect to ever see 20nm GF CPUs for sale, honest truth.

    What do you mean?

    on 22 January 2014

Well, there is a difference between the larrabee and MIC. The only difference was that larrabee had some texture mapping units in order to speed up the texturing and filtering.

Why don't you expect 20nm CPU's from GF ? Isn't GF backed up by the likes of IBM and samsung ? After all they are in a collaboration called "common platform".

Well if you had seen the reviews for AMD kaveri as of now you'll notice that there's alot of "meh" and in general it isn't getting good reception at all but then again what are we to expect from AMD. To take advantage of AMD kaveri you would essentially need OpenCL 2.0 to see the benefits of a heterogenous architecture. The fact that OpenCL adoption rate has been slow as hell I doubt software developers in the future will budge anytime soon to support it for the only few that can actually see some gains. The truth is AMD has very little influence to developers and this is a problem because they essentially banked on the AMD fusion vision in order to gain some grounds back in the processor space. AMD's partners however are not small and they have a huge influence to devlopers so it may be best for AMD to try and rely on their partners instead to help accelerate OpenCL adoption.

    < pauluzzz1981 posted something on Soleron's wall:

thanks for your reply. I like to know more about black holes an carbon dating. I don't trust that theory.

Carbon dating - so there is radioactive carbon present in animals that decays over time to normal carbon. While it's alive the ratio of radioactive to normal is constant because it's exchanging carbon with the environment. When it dies, it stops exchanging carbon and all the remaining radioactive carbon slowly decays to normal carbon over time at a fixed rate. If we know what that rate is, and we find a dead animal, we can find out how long it's been since it died.

The rate of radioactive decay is a universal constant and does not change no matter where it is or how long ago it was.

Of every animal we have carbon dated, it's been consistent with every other animal. If it was wrong you'd expect to find inconsistencies between them. Like animals in the wrong rock layer when they should be older/younger. But we don't find any of that.

Thus carbon dating has overwhelming evidence of accuracy.

Why don't you trust it? Is it just because it conflicts with the Bible?

For every star or planet there's a certain speed you need to have to get off it. For Earth, that's why rockets have to go as fast as they do (11.2km/s) to leave the atmosphere. And for the Sun it's even faster (617.5km/s) because the gravity is stronger than Earth. You'd need to be going that fast to get away from the Sun's gravity. Now imagine an object massive enough, with enough gravity, where that escape speed is faster than light (300000km/s). Such an object wouldn't let light or anything else escape, because nothing can go faster than that. This is called a black hole.

We have good evidence of extremely massive but dark objects in the universe that must be black holes. We can tell because the stars and planets around them are moving just like they would in extremely strong gravity.
