Friday news, part two:

SWAT-themed tactics game Hot Brass begins open beta testing next week
https://www.pcgamer.com/swat-themed-tactics-game-hot-brass-begins-open-beta-testing-next-week/
Hot Brass is a SWAT-themed "action-stealth-strategy" game, which immediately brought to mind memories of Sierra's old tactical shooter series. It is not like that, though: Instead, it's a top-down tactics game featuring a variety of maps and scenarios that puts a priority on thinking rather than shooting—although going by the title, there will be a good bit of shooting going on too.

Quantic Dream opens the door to more PC releases with move to self-publishing
https://www.pcgamer.com/quantic-dream-opens-the-door-to-more-pc-releases-with-move-to-self-publishing/
French game studio Quantic Dream has been known primarily as a PlayStation studio. It's not owned by Sony, but its previous three releases—Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, and Detroit: Become Human—were published by Sony and, until quite recently, exclusive to PlayStation consoles. That will change in the future, however, as Quantic Dream says it's now in a position where it can publish its own stuff.

Crippling server issues are getting in the way of Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem's big launch

Another day, another online game launch hampered by widespread server issues. It's a story as old as time, and this version involves Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem, a gorgeous action RPG that graduated out of Steam Early Access today. Though Wolcen has been dominating Steam's best sellers list all week, today's full launch is proving enormously successful, with a current peak of over 60,000 players—a number that keeps on climbing.
Update, 02/13/2020, 4:00 pm PST: Wolcen's developers have given another update recently. "Servers and server capacities are currently being deployed and will be fully functional in a few hours," reads a Twitter update. "We're also preparing a hotfix for progression reset issues. We will push that hotfix in a few hours as well."

Stardew Valley creator would like everyone to please calm down

Earlier this week, Stardew Valley creator Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone said on Twitter that he's working on two new projects, a non-farming game set in the Stardew Valley game world, and another that's even less well-defined at this point. The comments got a lot of attention, despite their very casual, offhand nature: An awful lot of people really like Stardew Valley, and the promise of more—even if only tangentially connected—is exciting.

Fallout 76 Wastelanders will let you recruit (and maybe seduce) a bartender for your camp

A couple of weeks ago Bethesda gave us a rundown of the reputation system coming to Fallout 76 when the Wastelanders expansion arrives on Steam this April. This week, they dished up some information about "Allies," a sort of limited version of the NPC companions from previous Fallout games.

Big changes are coming to the way Destiny 2 armor mods work next season
https://www.pcgamer.com/big-changes-are-coming-to-the-way-destiny-2-armor-mods-work-next-season/
Destiny 2's Armor 2.0 system, introduced to the game last year in the Shadowkeep expansion, made some big and mostly positive changes to the game's handling of armor, particularly with regard to customization—the most important part of the game, as any serious Destiny player will tell you. One aspect of it that fell short, however, was elemental affinities—arc, void, or rolar—which affects what mods can be placed on armor. Under the current rules, if you don't like the affinity of a particular piece of armor, your only option is to re-grind and hope for the best, which is not ideal. In the next season, however, that will change.

Massive Entertainment producer confirms that Avatar game is still in development

It's been a long time since we last heard anything about Massive Entertainment's game based on James Cameron's Avatar, meaning it would've been easy to assume it had been quietly canned. Except, according to a Massive producer, The Division developer is still hard at work on it… it's just not ready to say anything else at the moment. In an interview with Screenrant, Jesper Karabanov confirmed that the game was still in development, but that he can't say anything else about it yet.

The new season will add two more characters to the roster, revealed today as Iana and Oryx. Ubisoft is waiting to fully explain these characters this weekend at its big annual competition, the Six Invitational, but some fresh lore sets the table: Iana comes from a family of engineers, washed out of the Air Force "for reasons beyond her control," and is currently residing on a space station, while Oryx is Kaid's second-in-command at the Fortress, but has a mysterious 15-year gap in his history. (Perhaps he picked up a gig as a stunt double for Vinnie Jones.)
