FF7R was just a marketing tool that the PS4 needed. It was a push for sales and I think it did what was needed for SONY.

(To be honest, with all that is happening with the Michael Jackson thing right now - I know, a little off topic - but I'm seriously thinking about boycotting SONY. Selling everything I own that is Sony. Fuck them...new gen is looking like Microsoft for me.)

Sony didn't need it. Square Enix did. The PlayStation 4 was dominating the competition. The Last of Us and Bloodborne had already been released to rave reviews and plenty of sales with Uncharted 4 leading the next hype charge. Most third party games were selling better on PS4 as well. Square Enix was trying to rebuild its image with the community after a series of disasters. The FF7 remake was part of that push.
