And here I was assuming that they were going to write in a relationship between Alara and Ed since Halston and Seth are dating in real life, and since Kelly is dating the teacher now on the show, leaving Ed and Alara both single, the last thing I expected was for them to write off Alara completely

Reading up on it, the rumor is she is only leaving because she got a bigger movie role and the filming schedules conflicted. Here's hoping that she comes back for season 3, assuming the show is renewed for a 3rd season, because she is by far my favorite character on the show. 

I think it may be partially that they were dating, but aren't anymore. Also, like you mentioned, the other stuff is conflicting with her schedule. I don't know what to make of it all. Found out about all this by accident after last week's episode. She's probably my favorite too.
