It was a social media site that was in the same design as a blogging network users could even have multiple blog like pages on a single account the site until the change in terms allowed freedom of expression as long as someone didn't go too extreme because of this it became popular with not just people dabbling in nsfw content but also artists, modders, gamers etc...
Skyrim modders for example used it to create their own personal space for their own mods giving them an alternative to hosting on modding sites like Nexus.
