The NRA represents more than just those five million members, just as the ACLU represents more than its 1.75 million members.
These are civil rights non-profits and an integral part of American democracy.
Direct donations to congress persons is a small part of the NRA's influence. Only something like 3% of Rubio's funding comes from the NRA, for example.
What really makes the NRA powerful is that they motivate a large group of passionate single-issue voters to vote according to their report cards.
