Once an opportunity arises for one portion to break away, other portions see their chance and try to quickly follow the path into independence.

I think the reason why Russia was able to retain so much of its territory is because the Siberian regions conquered were extremely sparsely populated, and it was mainly Russian migration into those regions that boosted the population. The 14 Soviet Republics that separated were more densely populated, however, which meant that the Russians weren't able to assimilate the peoples as easily.
