The dumb part is that if he just stuck to the story this probably would just blow over but instead because he want to show he was the one that pulled the trigger, he adds more fuel for obstruction of Justice.  This is why at every turn Trump shows just how stupid he is.  Really, by admitting he was going to fire Comey and admitting he asked him to divulge information about the investigation against him shows probably cause for Obstruction.  You would think by now Trump people would have someone in a room with him during all interviews to shut him up as he rolls into one blunder after another.

It is pretty astounding, really. He kicks a big hornet's nest, raises concerns and fears that he's using his authority to stamp out the campaign investigation, kicks up a big cloud of questions and then, just when surrounding pressure seems to have reached its peak and the White House is in full damage control mode, Trump digs down, finds his inner resolve, and somehow makes things even worse for himself and his people. White House explanations? Torpedoed! Trump's own personal finger in the pie? Confirmed by Trump himself! I can just imagine his spokespeople finally getting back to their offices after a harrowing day of fending off reporters and trying to make this move sound feasible, only to check the news and blurt out 'Oh Goddamnit, The Boss Said What?!?!'
