Had to think about this for a while, but I really think it comes down to Bloodborne.

There have been lots of great games so far, but just about every other major tent pole game I've played this gen has been great with caveats. MGSV struggled with its narrative and payoff, FF15 had similar issues, Destiny was, at launch, fun but ultimately a trainwreck, The Last Guardian made me cry but also very frustrated, Uncharted 4 for whatever reason didn't leave an emotional impact like its predecessors, and I could probably rant in long paragraphs about my numerous problems with Fallout 4.

Bloodborne is really unequivocally great in every regard without any sort of compromise or shortcoming. And that's coming from someone who never had a taste for Dark Souls. It's completely immaculate.
