Except nobody says casually says "I am from America"
when they mean they are from somewhere else in the American continents besides USA.
It's just not done, it is clearly less informative than any other statement you could make (specific country, continent, region).
No other country within the American continent and archipelagos contains the word "America" within it's name, formal or informal.
When referencing all of the American contents, the proper grammar is "the Americas" (plural), given 2 distinct continents.
So there really is no actual confusion when using the term "America" in an English sentence in the manner the OP used.
As evidenced by the fact that nobody was actually confused, despite this being an international internet forum.

Further, "United States" is hardly specific either.  The southern neighbor to the USA is in fact "The United States of Mexico".
Plenty of other cases exist, e.g.  "Germany" despite a number of "German" tribes existing in multiple nations. (analogous to "America")

Fact is, the name of the USA is itself problematic, because it has no territory in South America.  But that's it's name.  
"America" is internationally understood as the name of a country whose abbreviation of formal name is USA.  Deal with it. 

I think I kinda derailed the discussion with my comment, but anyways, ill respond.

Its more a matter of making your message being more easily understood than anything else.The fact that nobody was confused by the term is because everyone here is more informed than the general public.(at least I like to believe so)And I mean, you need to know how to write in english pretty well, so that entry barrier already filters the users.This is more for people that are not users(lurkers) that like to read through the comments and cant comment.Plus, the point of the thread is about products.Saying a product is from America is not as correct or easily understood as saying I am from America.

Furthermore, the example you gave about Germany is rather weak, since that can be implied to many countries."Spain" despite the Americas being mostly compromised of spanish speaking countries,"Portugal" despite other portuguese "tribes" existing worldwide.And the same applies with english.The point is that "United States" is part of the formal and informal name of the country, while for many countries it isnt so, including Mexico.So it would be as specific as using america, which is also the same name of the continents, in my personal opinion.

Im not trying to downplay or step on anyones patriotism here.Im just saying that, in my opinion and I stress this, the term US would be more apropriatte in this discussion, since the discussion itself isnt a US-topic related only.
