Wii fit is a fad the same as with most home exercise products are. For most people it will be something else to throw in the closet in a month or two. Now if you are serious about changing your lifestyle by exercising and eating right, not just short term but for the long run, then Wii fit (as with all other home equipment) can be very helpful. Yet if you don't like to exercise then Wii fit won't be much help.
As far as the board use for games it will be mostly limited to games like skiing and maybe stateboard games so unless you a big fan on these Wii fit may not be worth the cost.

If you expect the Wii Fit will cause children (as well as adults) to exercise who normally are not interested then forget it. While you may get them interested for a short amount of time it will not take them long to learn exercise is more work than fun.

Personally, why I have seen so many people fail with weightloss programs is what they choose doesn't suit them ... Everyone assumes that there is a one-size fits all solution and buys excercise equipment or joins a gym without ever asking whether it suits them.

You take someone who loves to dance and put them into a couple of dance classes a week and they can/will probably stick with the program for a long period of time; take someone who likes sports and get them involved with a sports team (soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis, etc.) and they can/will probably stick with it for a long period of time; and you take someone who is big into outdoor activities like camping/hiking and get them involved with rock-climbing and encourage additional hikes and they can/will stick with the program for a long time. There are very few people who are personally motivated and enjoy doing activities like running on a treadmill or lifting weights.

Where Wii Fit comes into play is there are (probably) quite a few people who can be motivated through the use of a videogame; consider how many people are willing to level grind in World of Warcraft for the opportunity to Loot Grind so that they can grind in the Battlegrounds.

Will this work for everyone?
Not even close, but it may work for a lot of people ...
