I don't think Nintendo will aim for funky, or at least, that funky. People can understand the idea of a Fusion system: you can play the same games on a home console and a handheld. It's not rocket science. But if they start to make odd devices, they will be ignored by everyone: the casuals won't care because it's too complicated, the core gamers won't take it seriously, and the faithful Nintendo fans won't be there in enough numbers to support it.
Nintendo needs a concept that works. The last thing Nintendo needs is another VirtualBoy.
