I would assume by Japanese Reception he's talking about user scores such as these:

with XCX getting 3 and a half stars compared to XC's 4 and a half. I don't personally put much weight in user reviews but I figure if one is going to talk about general consumer reception this is one of the few metrics.

I don't see any reason that FF Fanboys would be more of a problem now than they were for the previous Xenoblade.
I'm not saying that this means XCXis worse than XC but in the discussion of "Will XCX score as high as XC?" and people are saying that there's no question that it will score above a 9, I think there are reasonable points to be made that it might not.

I agree with you, and my personal prediction for the game is an 88, wich is a very good score, but there is some people that is too sure about the game not being able to reach 90 or more than low 80´s just because they have seen that it has worse scores than the original on places so reliable like Amazon.jp or Famitsu... that´s not really a good clue of what the critic performance in the west will be.
