Before everyone starts jumping on me saying: "You stupid Nintendo nerd, go back and play Mario for the 4,583,585th time", let me make something clear; The Last of Us is a good high quality game, I wouldn't have finish it otherwise; but what exactly does this game does in order to be considered a masterpiece or Game of the Generation?

The gameplay is solid, but nothing out of the ordinary and in some cases…kind of boring if I'm being honest. Maybe is just me that I tend to like more action type shooters like Borderlands or Bioshock, but in the Last of Us there was nothing that made me say: "Wow, this is really fun to play!". It was good, and definitely enough to keep me playing till the end. The crafting system was also very good, and aside from the smoke bombs, I found all items to be useful (which is something games tend to lack).

The graphics and atmosphere are amazing, there's nothing really to complain here.

The music, can't honestly remember a single song.

Story…well is like watching a really good TV show; and I don't mean this in a bad way, the story is extremely solid, the interactions between Joel and Ellie are really well done, but there were no "mind blowing" moments or any moments that will stay in my mind for a few weeks (not even the ending). Usually when I'm really into a story of a movie, book or game I can't stop thinking about it for a few days or weeks…that didn't happen with The Last of Us. It was just a good satisfying watch, simple as that.

Again before everyone starts jumping on me, the game is good, solid and has amazing atmosphere; but in my opinion, there's nothing that truly stands out to make it worthy of a masterpiece or Game of the Generation title.

You stupid Nintendo nerd.  Go back and play Mario for the 4,583,585th time.  I'm just kidding.

Honestly, I completely agree with you.  The Last of Us is incredibly overrated.  Yes it's a good game, but it's definitely not the game that everyone makes it out to be, not even close.  There are just too many problems with the game that people just seem to overlook, whether it's for graphics, because it's Naughty Dog, who knows.

For being a stealth game there are way too many areas you can stealth your way through only to be forced into killing an incoming horde of runners, clickers, etc, because it's part of the storyline.  The games AI is terrible, the characters constantly getting in your way , pushing you out of the way, etc.  A lot of the infected will make a beeline around the AI towards the player, with the AI completely ignoring them.  The bricks and bottles don't always stun clickers when thrown at them, meaning you'll hit them with a brick or bottle only to run into a cutscene kill.  Or how many boring, push Elly across the water on a plaet areas do there have to be?  Even Elly comments on it with "yeah, yeah, get on the f'ing palet.*

Infact, most of the time when playing the game, walking around and exploring is nice because it's beautiful to look at.  It's when you're in the areas infested with enemies whether it's human or infected that the game just drags.  You're trying to make your way through those sections to get to better sequences.  And it's not because it's stealth, because there are other games that make the stealth sequences more enjoyable.

I really think, graphics, infected, and Naughty Dog are the reasons people love this game so much and ignore all the flaws it has. It's not a bad game, but it's also not a great game.  It's merely a good game.
