We still need a formal announcement that nintendo has the rights over bayonetta and devil's third, though.

we'll have to disagree on what sub franchise means. to me, if the game is completely different, it is it's own franchise, regardless of wich character it uses.

OK. We'll just put an asterisk on those two for now.
Be prepared for the formal announcement. Hahahaha!

And we're not in total disagreement about a whole different genre being its own franchise.
Mario is primarily a platformer but Mario Kart is a cart racer while Mario Tennis is a tennis game while Mario Party is a board game.
I DO see those games as distinct franchises but my only point is that they spun off of the original Mario platform franchise & each carry a little bit of what made the original Mario franchise what it is.

That's why I use the word 'franchise' in 'sub-franchise'.
To me that's a compliment on how powerful a franchise Mario can be when it can spinoff so many strong franchises that can standalone from their source.
Some kids today are being introduced to Mario through Mario Kart rather than New Super Mario Bros. U.

Maybe the word 'series' will be better suited.
