The reason the 3DS has a ton of exclusives is because it can't even run Wii games (as demonstrated by the fact that Xenoblade is N3DS exclusive and still cut back from the 2011 release). So if they didn't make games specifically for 1990s architechture, there wouldn't be any games full stop.

The thing is, handheld consoles were never supposed to be for playing home console games. If people wanted to do that, they would just buy a home console. Nintendo knows this, which is why the 3DS has so many games that can easily be played on the go. Sure, they don't have the graphics of Wii games and there aren't many ports, but that means little when people aren't looking for ports, but rather new games built ground up for a handheld experience.
