How Do You Define "Indie"?

Yes, of course AAA studios can make indie games. Indie doesn't mean independent anymore, it is pretty much its own genre so games like Child of Light, Ori or even Gamefreak's badass Elephant game are all still indies. They are similar to other indie games, they look like indies, they have similar budget to other indie games and they get the reception of indie games. Regardless of dev, they are indie.

Those are simply 2D games. 2D != indie.

The definitions is clear. Indie = not published by a big publisher. Therefore Ori is not indie! Noone would Rayman Legends and indie game, right?!

Is it really that simple though? I don't think it is. Indie doesn't really mean independent game any more. It has become its own style. Those games are of the indie style and are therefore indie games.

I'm sorry. I grew up with 2D games and I really can't see it like that. Ori is an 2D castlevania style game, not an indie.
